CAREER SUMMARY

Shad Begum’s dedication to the cause of women’s rights has led to significant improvements in the lives of marginalized communities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the newly merged districts. Through her role as the founder and Executive Director of ABKT (Association for Behaviour & Knowledge Transformation), she has implemented numerous initiatives aimed at promoting financial literacy, vocational skills development, and entrepreneurship among women. Her tireless work has not only empowered women at the grassroots level but has also contributed to the overall socio-economic development of the region. With over two decades of experience, Shad Begum continues to be a pivotal figure in advocating for gender equality, economic independence, and political representation for women in Pakistan.
Shad’s efforts in economic empowerment have been coupled with her leadership in enhancing women’s political participation through capacity building, advocacy, and mentorship programs designed to increase women’s representation and influence at the local government level.
Deeply influenced by the social inequalities around her and inspired by her father’s social work from an early age, Shad Begum became a nationally and internationally recognized figure due to her determined struggle to improve the conditions of marginalized segments, particularly women, in the northwest of Pakistan.
Shad is the founder and Executive Director of the non-profit Association for Behaviour & Knowledge Transformation (ABKT), an organization dedicated to the economic and political empowerment of communities in underserved areas of Pakistan. Her efforts have been especially impactful in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the newly merged districts (formerly FATA), where she has worked tirelessly to foster economic empowerment and enhance women’s political participation at the grassroots level.
During the Taliban insurgency and the mass displacement of people in the Swat-Malakand region in 2009-2010, Shad’s resilience kept ABKT alive against enormous odds.To effectively engage the illiterate communities, her work extends to the use of different locally adaptable and contextualized tools and techniques such as community training, pictorial manuals, and other accessible resources to ensure that the women she supports can understand and apply financial literacy and business skills in their daily lives, empowering them to become economically independent and politically engaged.
Shad has previously worked as a consultant for the UN Human Settlements Program on the “Building Gender Ladder Project” and with UNDP’s Women Political Participation Program. She has also actively contested local elections in 2001 and 2005 as an independent candidate, serving as a councilor in Dir Lower for 8 years. As an Ashoka Fellow, Acumen Fellow, and Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow at NED, USA, Shad has gained global recognition. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the U.S. Department of State’s “International Woman of Courage Award” (2012) and the “Prize for Creativity in Rural Life” by the Women’s World Summit Foundation (2008). In 2019, she founded Women Voices Pakistan, an initiative designed to connect and amplify the efforts of women and girls across the country for a more equal and just world. As a TED speaker, she delivered her first official TED talk in Palm Springs, California, on November 29, 2018.
